Current Seasonal Flu Situation
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, Vietnam recorded 289,876 seasonal flu cases and 8 fatalities in 2024.
The National Hospital of Tropical Diseases is currently treating 8 flu patients, including several severe cases of Influenza A, some of whom require ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) support.
In Ho Chi Minh City, data and reports from the HCMC Center for Disease Control (HCDC) and specialized pediatric and infectious disease hospitals indicate no abnormal trends in the admission and treatment of flu patients.
What is the Flu?
The flu (influenza) is an acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. The primary circulating strains currently causing illness in Vietnam are Influenza A/H3N2, Influenza A/H1N1, and Influenza B.
The virus spreads directly from person to person through tiny respiratory droplets released when an infected individual talks, coughs, or sneezes.
Seasonal flu typically peaks during late autumn, winter, and early spring.
Symptoms of the Flu
Flu symptoms usually appear about 2 days after exposure to the virus. Common symptoms include:
- Acute fever
- Cough (usually a dry cough)
- Headache, muscle aches, and joint pain
- General malaise and fatigue
- Sore throat and runny nose
For young children, the elderly, individuals with chronic underlying medical conditions, and immunocompromised people, seasonal flu can progress severely and lead to death.

Proactive Measures for Seasonal Flu Prevention
- Wear a mask and cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or hand sanitizer.
- Limit contact with sick individuals and avoid spitting in public places.
- Maintain a balanced diet and regular exercise routine to boost your immunity.
- Get an annual seasonal flu vaccine to protect yourself and your family.
